Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken on top of Federal hill in Baltimore, Md

Time

It was 6 am.

Lighting

The sun was just starting to come up, but wasn't enough to light up the model. So I setup one speedlight with a 43" softboc umbrella. The umbrella was positioned on the right side of the model and angled down.

Equipment

I used a canon 6d mark ii, the 70-200mm f2.8 lens, one neewer speedlite(cheap one where I have to manually set the power), 43" umbrella softbox, and the city of Baltimore.

Inspiration

I have been working on improving my fitness photography, and wanted to try some new shots. I was originally hoping to do some sunrise shots with the model. However the weather changed from being sunny to over cast and eventually rained. We still made the most of the day and got some great shots. This actual shot was inspired by the moment. I wanted her to stretch some before we did the running shots, and had to test out my lights while she was stretching. The lighting and pose looked good so we went with it.

Editing

I bumped up the contrast highlights, and clarity some. Then dropped the blacks and the shadows some. Had to also do a little white balancing/temp changing.

In my camera bag

When I'm doing most of my shoots I don't have the latest and greatest equipment(can't afford it). So instead I make do with my t3i, 50mm f1.4, the 3 speedlites I have, a few softboxes, and if I am in studio or at a location with outlets I can use the larger strobes and flashes I own.

Feedback

The lighting was basic, one light angled down on the model. It was in front of the model too. I shot low to the ground, may have even been sitting down. It all worked out due to testing the lights. Some times the best shots are not ones you initially planned on taking.
