Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in a studio in Baltimore.

Time

This was shot around 3pm. Spent the first half of the day shooting out in a park until my rental time in studio started

Lighting

I used 2 strobes and 2 speedlites for the shoot. Used 37” umbrellas for the strobes and 2 soft boxes for The speedlites. Used the speedlites for lighting the background and as rim lights on her. Then used the strobes as a key light and fill light

Equipment

Canon 5d mk iv. Canon 24-70f2.8. Rented those for the shoot. Then used some neewer strobes and yonguno speedlights. The umbrellas and soft boxes were also neewer. I want to say the cost of renting the camera and lens for a week was equivalent to the total cost of all my lights and modifiers. So don’t need to spend a lot of money to get the shot, just need to play around with the lighting some

Inspiration

Looked through some shots of various magazines while in studio trying to replicate the pose( mode had no posing experience). And then moved my lights until I got the look I felt would work

Editing

I did some post processing in Lightroom. Then opened the file in photoshop and messed around with skin smoothing, exposure, brightness, color gradients and a pink color over lay.

In my camera bag

Now I use a canon eos R, tamron 24-70f2.8g2 and the 70-200 version. Have the same lights and modifiers(I do need to buy some new ones since they are getting beat up from my outdoor shoots.). I do have a few new larger umbrellas and a battery powered strobe.

Feedback

Get familiar with lighting. Know what certain lights, modifiers, and angles of light hitting do. Test out ideas before the shoot or make sure your model knows you will be testing ideas out. Also try one light setup then slowly move each light after each shot to see how light affects everything.
