Location
This was taken at a gym just outside of Baltimore.Time
Was shot early in the morning before the gym got too crowded.Lighting
Wanted to go for a darker more angry feel for the photo, since I was having the middle scream. I used one light to illuminate the side of his face and cast a shadow on the other side.Equipment
Camera: canon 6d Mark ii Lens: I think it was a 24-70 f2.8. Not sure if it was canon or sigma brand. One rectangular soft box to right of camera, with a single speed lite. The soft box was about 4 feet away to ensure the light hit right. No tripod was handheld.Inspiration
Wanted to just show the emotion some athletes have just before and after deadlifting a heavier weight, and accomplishing their goal.Editing
I did some post work in Lightroom to get the highlights and shadows to a good starting point. Then I finished editing in photoshop to remove any out of place light sources in the background, get my contrast just right and added a light blue color gradient to make the photo look colder(a warm/orange) color did not evoke the same emotion when viewing. In my camera bag
In my camera bag I now always have my Eos R, tamron 24-70 f2.8 g2, tamron 70-200 f2.8 g2, speedlites, triggers and receivers, lots of double A and triple A batteries, gels, and neutral grey color cards. In my other bag holding my diffusers and stands I have a variety of stands of differing heights, a 7 foot reflective umbrella, two 3 foot umbrellas, 2 rectangular box reflectors, and some weights to hold down my stands when needed. Oh and one 300w strobe for when I need a larger brighter light.Feedback
The main thing is lighting and getting the model to nail the emotion. For screaming shots encourage them to actually scream. A fake scream just does not get the same raw emotion. You can tell it’s staged. For the lighting try different reflectors and diffusers. Each one adds a different touch to the image.
