It was the height of the dry season in the Gir forest in western India. Herds of cattle had just returned to their small villages on the edge of the forest after spending the day in the field . Walking down the unpaved streets, their hooves stirred up clouds of fine dust that lingered for a while. The atmosphere was surreal as the villagers, moving like ghostly shadows, continued about their business, their silhouettes shared with tall spiny Euphorbia, a cactus look-a-like common to the region.
