Location
This photo was taken at our home in New Hampshire, USA while out on in our yard with our dog Niki on a summer day in July.Time
Our house faces East and morning light in our yard is always wonderfully warm. This photo was taken at 8:46am.Lighting
The lighting on this image has been adjusted in Photoshop to have the light highlighting her face. The light in the original photograph was warm but flat over the whole image.Equipment
This image was taken with my Canon 5D MIII ISO 100 300mm F9.0 1/250. The long lens allowed me to get her beautiful face in great detail and it blurred the background nicely. That said, I did replace the background in Photoshop to give it more contrast and interest. I also used Photoshop to sharpen parts of her face, to highlight her eyes and to boost color somewhat.Inspiration
I am always inspired by our beautiful dogs! Niki is a rescue who was completely shut down when we got her at one year of age. This photo is the epitome of how far she has come. She is relaxed, hopeful, looking towards the future not towards the past, and is a stunningly beautiful dog. That is what I hoped to capture - the beautify of a rescue who has found her loving home.Editing
I use Lightroom to import and organize my photos. I do general adjustments in LR and then go into Photoshop for more specific adjustments. In this case I used PS to mask her and replace the background. I also used it to sharpen and to change the direction of the light to be from the upper right corner towards her beautiful face.In my camera bag
I always have my Canon 5D MIII, three lenses (100-300mm, 14-24mm and my go to 24-105mm), batteries, cards, cleaning cloth, a snack, tissues, business cards, and a $20 bill. I mostly shoot hand held but do bring my tripod if I know I'll be doing slow speed shots. I have a Brenthaven backpack that has been all over the country with me. It is very comfortable to wear and holds a lot of gear. I carry filters but don't use them that often except for slow water images (ND filter). I can get my filter effects in post processing if needed.Feedback
Take plenty of images of dogs at a high speed on auto focus to avoid blur, unless you want blur! We have a greyhound also and I've found it's helpful to also have a spotter as one of our greys ran into me and broke the lens off my first digital camera (a point and shoot). For this image, Niki was starting up to sniff the air and it made for a nice sharp image. Usually they are moving around and I get mostly action shots! One view I love to shoot is when they are running up the deck stairs.
