Behind The Lens

Location

This shot was taken at Hampton Beach in New Hampshire USA. it was quite a surprise to me to see the waves crashing over the sea wall, as it was a bright sunny day. I was walking my dogs and saw the sea spray up ahead. We stopped to look and I was thrilled to see it was waves from a passing offshore hurricane.

Time

This photo was taken mid morning around 11am.

Lighting

For this shot, lighting wasn’t as important. I worked with shutter speed to get the water stopped in time just before it crashed on the bench.

Equipment

This was shot with a Canon 5d III. Hand held while standing on a big rock. Lens was a Canon 24-105mm. Barely zoomed out as I was close enough to get wet.

Inspiration

In this case the inspiration was an unplanned surprise at the power of the crashing waves. It was an amazing sight and I had to photograph it!

Editing

I did process the raw file a few different ways. For this one I used a very light touch of Topaz Labs Clarity and Glow and some basic Lightroom adjustments. It didn’t take much. My goal was to get the droplets sharp and frozen in time.

In my camera bag

I always have my Canon, three lenses : wide 11 to 24mm, zoom 70 to 300mm and the 24 to 105mm which is my go to lens. Batteries, charger, extra cards, remote, lens cloth, a snack and a $20. I have found myself out and about shooting without my wallet so I keep food and money in my bag! I use a tripod but not often as I have a very steady hand and stance.

Feedback

Always have your gear with you! I was not out to shoot on this day and I would have missed this amazing sight had I not put my bag in the car! Now that I’ve seen what offshore storms can do, I visit the ocean more often when I know the storms are out there.
