My goal for the moment was to take a picture of the waterfall that wasn't overdone. I found these intricate root systems finding a way around the severe rock faces to thrive along the side of the river, and instantly was mesmerized by the enchanted quality of them. It seemed like something out of a movie.

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Gooseberry Falls in Northern Minnesota. It’s a state park with extensive trails following the gooseberry river to Lake Superior, arguably the biggest of the Great Lakes.

Time

This was taken mid morning when it was very cloudy overhead. The sun began to peak out around noon.

Lighting

Normally I try to take photographs in the early morning are late afternoon, during ‘Golden hours’ but it was a cloudy day and I couldn’t help but capture such a beautiful place. The clouds gave it more of a mysterious light, however, so they still turned out wonderful.

Equipment

Canon Rebel T5 with a long lens. I don’t remember exactly, as I took this many years ago now, but I do know it was a popular long focus lens that came with the camera in a kit.

Inspiration

Nature inspires me ALL THE TIME. I love waterfalls, lakes, rivers, autumn leaves and intricate roots.

Editing

I did a minor amount of post processing in Adobe Lightroom. As a rule, cameras do not have the capability of seeing colors and contrast as well as our own eyes, so my goal in post editing is simply to bring out the missing info that I saw while taking the picture.

In my camera bag

I have my canon with two lenses- a long range and wide normal range lens, a tripod, and a back up memory card. Oh- I also keep the battery charger in there for safe keeping ??

Feedback

Look at the minor details while you are on a hike. Look for that odd shaped tree, the trickle of water, or wrapped up roots on rock. Also, remember the thirds rule- it helps with any capture.
