Driving through the Moremi in the heat of the day, came across this male lion staring into the distance, seeming to sense something which was not there.
Totally focused, was it a female friend or another male foe.

Sadly never found out!

Behind The Lens

Location

Driving through Khwai just North of the Moremi in Botswana I came across this wonderful male lion lying in waiting, waiting for what only he would know.

Time

This was mid morning on a fresh winters day, full light and no cloud cover,

Lighting

Not on this one, all was perfect but for a little harsh light, hence the vignette to tone some of it down.

Equipment

My Canon 400D was close at hand, used the Canon 90~300 which was fitted and shot away, no flash, no filter and no tripod, the vehicle window was as good a support.

Inspiration

No inspiration was needed, the picture presented itself and I was fortunate to have been at the right place at the right time - it's often Gods gift to a photographer - it's just there!

Editing

Yes, had to crop a bit and vignette some to emphasise the subject and to remove a little of the harsh light (tone down).

In my camera bag

As a wildlife photographer in Africa I carry quite a lot of gear, my two camera's are the Canon 7DMkII and my old faithful my 50D, as to lens's I have the Canon EFS 10~18, the EF 28~70L 2.8, the EF 70~200 f2.8L IS then the Tamron 150~600. Added to this is the Canon 100 f2.8 L IS USM Macro and a EFS 18~135 purely for video. Then a couple of other lenses for the occasion. The rest is normal stuff, tripod, flash etc. (The 400D & lens used in this photo does not form part of my normal gear - it's my simple point and shoot)

Feedback

Phew, I suppose it's 9 parts luck and 1 part planning in this one, perhaps the best advice I have is, ALWAYS have a camera on hand. who knows what gets served up, so best be ready!
