The Traverse City State Hospital, or the Northern Michigan Asylum as it was also known, first opened in 1885 as an insane asylum treating thousands of patients for mental illnesses and later tuberculosis, typhoid, diphtheria, and polio. Underground tunnels were built to transport patients from wing to wing without exposing them to the elements or to each other, and rumor has it that a "Portal to Hell" was discovered in one of the underground passageways. But that's not the only creepy thing about this deteriorating medical facility. Explorers have reported seeing lights flicker in rooms with no power, spotting shadows moving about dark hallways, and hearing voices when nobody is around. Today, folks can experience the phenomena for themselves with guided tours of the grounds.
