Behind The Lens

Location

Shot from the car park at Marsden Grotto, South Tyneside, UK.

Time

Mid morning. I was actually waiting to meet someone for a date! As I arrived a little early I thought I'd kill a little time and got tripod and camera out of the boot of my car.

Lighting

It was a day with a mix of cloud and blue skies, though the cloud was gathering. This allowed me to shoot a longer exposure without using a filter by closing down the aperture and reducing ISO to low and this in turn made the most of the foam of the waves breaking on the shore.

Equipment

Canon 5d Mk III, giotto carbon fibre tripod, 24-70 f2.8 USM lens

Inspiration

One of my more successful images of late was shot of the same stack but from sea level and at sunset. I wanted to shoot the rock without it being bathed in shadow, and by shooting down on it from the nearby cliffs I was able to incorporate the sea movement too.

Editing

I incorporated a gradient adjustment from the left to keep the main light on the rock, and increase the contrasts on the white foam to give it greater prominence

In my camera bag

Apart from the equipment used, I also carry a 70-200 and a 17-40 lens to give me good coverage, plus a few ND grad filters and big stoppers.

Feedback

The main lesson here is to always have a camera at hand. You never know what you might find and the couple of minutes I spent while waiting proved more productive than the date!
