This photo was taken at a friend's farm, who breeds labrador retrievers. We were taking care of our grandchildren for the day, so we drove to the farm to show them the new puppies. This was just one of the thirteen puppies we played with.Time
It was not a good time of the day for lighting, 3 p.m. I didn't go there for the purpose of taking photos, (however, I always take my cameras with me) I wanted to show the puppies to my grandson.Lighting
This photo was shot with natural light. I found this shade on the east side of their red barn. I was delighted to find this old wooden wagon wheel leaning against the barn, which made for a perfect backdrop.Equipment
This photo was taken with a Canon 1DX with a 16x35 lens.Inspiration
After playing with the puppies for a while, I couldn't resist taking a few photos of these cuties. I thought a close up with a wide angle would be the perfect set up to capture the puppies cuteness. I wanted their faces distorted, which I did by setting the lens to 16 mm.Editing
I shoot in raw so I did some sharpening and added a little vibrance. I had to lower the highlights to keep the background from blowing out, even though my exposer was underexposed by -3 ev in camera. This under exposer meant I had to bump up the shadows to my liking. I like shooting in raw so that I can tweak my photos to my liking, instead of letting the camera do what it thinks best in jpeg.In my camera bag
I pack two Canon bodies in my backpack, a 1DX and a 7D mark II. I chose these two bodies, because they have similar focal systems. I carry two bodies, so that I have a full frame and a crop factor sensor on hand. I have a lot of diversity with these bodies and my 16x35, 24x70, and 70x200 zoom lens. I also carry one prime lens a 85mm 1.2ff for portraits. I carry a 2x converter to get extra reach on my 70x200 mounted on the 7D, which gives me a 640 focal length. Not bad for the money, compared to Canon's 600mm at $10,000+ price tag. I carry a full set of Lee graduated filters and a 10 stop ND filter for my landscape photos along with a Gitzo fiber tri-pod mounted with a Really Right Stuff ball head.Feedback
I thought a close up with a wide angle would be the perfect set up to capture the puppies' cuteness. I wanted their faces distorted, which I did by setting the lens to 16 mm. I shot wide open at 2.8 to blur the background and freeze the motion with a 1/6400 shutter speed. Puppies don't sit still for more than a second. I was hoping to take a shot with all the puppies sitting by the wheel, instead I got this capture of the last puppy running away from my planned shot.
