Behind The Lens

Location

The photograph was taken in the grounds of Petwood Hotel in Woodhall Spa, Lincolnshire. A beautiful hotel with exquisite gardens, the hotel became famous as it was used as an Officers Mess by the Officers of No 617 (The Dambusters) Squadron RAF, when they moved from RAF Scampton to RAF Woodhall Spa after the famous WW2 bombing raid, when Scampton was having concrete runways put in. One of the bars in the hotel is named "The Squadron Bar" and is absolutely full of genuine historic photographs and artefacts from 617's residence at the hotel.

Time

The photograph was taken in the early afternoon, the weather was slightly overcast.

Lighting

Although it was overcast I was able to use natural light to good effect.

Equipment

Shot on a Nikon D7100 with Nikon 18-105 DX f3.5-5.6 lens, handheld, with manual settings 105 mm. f22, 1/200 sec, at ISO 1100.

Inspiration

Chantelle was walking towards the hotel as I wanted to photograph her with the beautiful black wooden beams in the background, matching her dress and fishnet stockings, and I noticed the shot and got her to stop where she was and pose for the shot.

Editing

This image required minimal processing, a minor crop and a little sharpening, and it was good to go!

In my camera bag

It depends what I am shooting, these days I normally take a Nikon D810 for portraiture, and a backup Nikon D3s. I usually have a Sigma 150-600 super telephoto attached to the D3s, for 'target of opportunity' shots of aircraft or wildlife. I usually have a Nikon 24-70 f2,8 and a Nikon 80-200 f2.8 in the bag too, if shooting portraits I will have a Sigma 50mm f1.4 Art too. I also have the usual accessories, tripod, remote release, flash speedlite, filters and wireless trigger. Spare batteries and memory cards. And a bottle of water !

Feedback

Don't be frightened to experiment with settings. Ordinarily I would have shot this scene using a wide aperture for the bokeh effect, but in this case I wanted the beams of the hotel in sharp focus, so threw the 'rulebook' out of the window and got this stunning shot.
