Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in an abandoned and derelict farm labourer's cottage by the side of a main road. I later found out that the cottage had been abandoned after a fire many years earlier. Sadly there was some tragedy attached to the story.

Time

The shoot was late afternoon in Spetember, around 4 o'clock.

Lighting

The shoot was conducted using natural light, as there were no windows and part of the roof was missing, there was abundant natural light !

Equipment

I shot the image using a Nikon D7100 DX camera with Nikon 50mm f1.8 lens, handheld.

Inspiration

The model is a lovely young lady, a singer and actress, and as she turned there was a beautiful graceful innocence and tranquility about her appearance, and I took the shot.

Editing

I ddin't do much processing as I wanted to keep the innocence and snapshot essence of the image. I did a minor amount of cropping and a small increase in the texture.

In my camera bag

These days I usually pack a Nikon D6, a D810, a Nikon 24-70 f2.8, a Nikon 80-200 f2.8, and a Sigma 50mm f1.4 Art, light meter, tripod.

Feedback

Don't be afraid to grab the snapshot of a naturally-occurring pose, posed images are great but often look just that - posed. I often get the model to move slowly through a pose and ask her to stop at the position I want, rather than get them to just stand in the position, this also gives the more natural look that 'soft' and sensual portraits require.
