Behind The Lens

Location

I live in Ulster County, New York in the Catskill Mountains. It is an area of low mountains that I have been told are the oldest around. They have eroded to the point of being rounded on top and not very high. It is both a rural area with farms and a forested area and lots of streams, ponds, lakes, resevoirs and rivers. Other than pockets of population, it is sparsely populated. This lends itself to wonderful scenery and landscape pictures. It is just a matter of choosing the area and the time of day to get a good photo.

Time

The time of day is probably mid to late afternoon.

Lighting

Given the density of the leafy greens, it is easy to get a more diffused lighting even on a sunny day such as this photo shows.

Equipment

I used a less expensive Nikon "point and shoot" camera with a limited zoom option.

Inspiration

My inspiration was the beauty of the area in which I live.

Editing

I may have done some cropping to eliminate telephone wires or guard rails on the road. Nothing fancy.

In my camera bag

This Nikon resides in my handbag with a charging cable and electrical adapter, for those "just in case" photo ops. I do have a Canon with a larger set-up that takes forethought to pack with me.

Feedback

I think macnuel has captured the essence of taking any landscape photo whether or not the climate or weather changes as abruptly as described. Patience will help capture the right light, the perfect cloud, the swaying of the leaves or the movement of the water.
