The right conditions for causing contrails to form are mostly found at high altitude (30,000 to 35,000 feet; 9100 to 10700 meters). At these altitudes supercooled water vapor requires a trigger to encourage deposition or condensation. The contrails are formed when the water in jet exhaust mixes with air, condenses and freezes into millions of ice crystals. Contrails are actually a type of cirrus cloud.
In order for contrails to form the air must also be wet and cold. When the plane crosses from wet air to dry air the contrails cease to be created.
