Location
This was one of the first shots of the hike around Johnson Lake, Alberta, Canada.Time
After having breakfast and driving for just over an hour to get to the lake, we started down the path to start our hike. It was a perfect winter day in the middle of March. It was cold, but not too cold (we Canadians like it a little cooler than normal) and I was looking forward to spending time time in nature with the pup and my cousin who had joined along for the hike. It was just before 11am when I was lucky enough to capture this moment.Lighting
I am an amateur at best, but love spending time outdoors- especially with my dog. I use what nature provides for lighting, and this day everything just seemed to line up perfectly to capture some great images.Equipment
This was shot with a Nikon D3100, with a Nikon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G lens. No there equipment was used.Inspiration
I love taking photos of my dog, especially in nature. Its pretty amazing- I swear Bandit knows when we are headed to the mountains, he seems so happy and content while out in the wilderness (very much like his owner). As we were walking past this spot, I had Bandit sit as I tried to capture some pictures from various angles. As I was standing beside him, he got distracted by people way out on the snow covered, frozen lake. I waded into the deep snow behind him and was able to reach this great vantage point, almost capturing the view from his perspective. As soon as I snapped that image and saw it on the playback screen- I knew I had something special.Editing
At the time I took this photo, the only post-processing "expertise" I had was using Instagram filters while posting to social media. It is one aspect of photography I am currently just dipping my feet into and am trying to learn as much as possible to help enhance future images. That being said, I do like trying to keep my photos as close to the original capture as possible if I do edit at all.In my camera bag
At the time I snapped this photo I only had the Nikon D3100, with a Nikon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G lens. I have recently upgraded to a Nikon D800 with some new lenses. I have a lot to learn, but I am excited to see what the future has in store, especially once I get a grasp on more advanced techniques with better equipment.Feedback
No matter what level of experience you have, what kind of equipment you have- get out and experience uncommon places. Don't be afraid to take lots of pictures, but always remember to put the camera away sometimes and experience the place you're in.
