Behind The Lens

Location

I took this at a group photoshoot in at HD Studios in Newcastle (https://www.hdstudio.space). I rarely attend such events as my work commitments keep me on the road so due to my inexperience realised that in my time with this particular model I'd shot mostly 3/4 length (see her other appearance in my gallery https://www.viewbug.com/photo/71994203). This was a shame since it wasted those magnificent boots, but the lighting set up favoured closer shots. A little later she moved to another part of the studio, but just as I realised this it was time for her to go and change. I persuaded her to give me a couple of full length shots very quickly but she wasn't really posing so much as standing there by this stage which is why I made the decision to crop the shot down and make the boots the entire focus of the shot.

Time

Studio shot so time of day was not relevant.

Lighting

Nothing very exciting going on with the lighting; soft box, white V flat, white background as I remember.

Equipment

Shot with Canon 5d III with 24-27 f2.8 USM lens

Inspiration

It was all about the boots! I chose the title thinking of the effort it would take to lace them up, though of course the zips at the ankle remove the need for this.

Editing

There were a couple of areas where her tanning product wasn't even so I retouched these using frequency separation to keep the texture but smooth the tones.

In my camera bag

In addition to camera and lens mentioned, a 70-200 f2.8 and 17-40 f4 give me a range of focal lengths since I shoot pretty much anything that interests me. My bag also has a few grad ND filters and stopper filters. Add in a Giotto tripod and that's enough to be carrying!

Feedback

Look out for studios running model nights - they're usually an inexpensive way of gaining experience, building your portfolio and doing some networking.
