A freighter passing through Sault Ste. Marie after exiting the Soo Locks.

The city(s) of Sault Ste. Marie (commonly refered to as " The Soo" ) are divided by the US - Canadian border and St. Marys River. The Southern city lies in the US state of Michigan and, the Northern city in the Canadian Province of Ontario.

Native Americans settled in the area approximately 12,000 years ago. The First Europeans settled when French Jesuit, Jacques Marquette founded a mission in 1668.

The Soo locks connect Lake Superior to Lake Huron and are the world's busiest canal in terms of tonnage passing through them. The locks can accomodate ships up 1,000 feet (300 m) long by 105 feet (32 m) wide.

The thickest of smoke is coming from a factory stack located behind the freighter. Also in the background, one wind generator only has two blades because it is still under construction.
