Location
I took this photo near Rotterdam in Autumn 2016 the day before a workshop of mine. Rotterdam gave us amazing places to have shooting with dogs in action.Time
I was having shooting with this amazing dog (a whippet of a friend) in the late afternoon with a nice light. Perfect for action!Lighting
I want to work with natural light only so it's very important to find the right location and the right angle to work even because the dog change postition faster during the action.Equipment
I used my Nikon D4 with the Nikon 300mm f/2,8 that I use every time is possible. It offers me a great capability to catch what I want by the action of a dog in all the situations. I don't use tripod, flashes that I don't like or other things.Inspiration
I was looking for something that could explain how much strong and fast was the action of this dog. So I decided to use something that was impressed by the dog and I thought about the sand like a bomb. So I waited and tried to have this shot I was thinking about.Editing
I post process all the images because they are RAW files to be worked. In this case I wanted to adjust the colors to give more warmness to picture and exploit the light i had by the sun on the beach using shadows that give more movement to the action. Then I worked with the dodge and burn on white and black colors on the fur and improving the transition of color and sharpness. Then other adjustments but nothng that changed the original picture. In my camera bag
My bag is really heavy even if I have to walk a lot. I like tele photo lens so I need heavy lens. I never forget my Nikon D5, Nikon D4, Nikon 300mm f/2,8, Nikon 70-200 f/2,8.....then other lenses like the Nikon 105mm f/2,8 for close portraits and macro, the Nikon 24mm f/1,4 for special portraits and landscapes with dogs, the Zeiss Otus 85mm f/1,4 that is something really amazing in portraits.Feedback
I suggest to think about the dog people are taking photos with. Because as for me the idea born depending on the dog you have. Some dogs are good in a way and others in another. I suggest to observe a lot before having a shooting with a dog. Then when the photographer will know the dog very well, will be able to understand which kind of picture and atmosphere is better to create around the action.
