I taked this photo last year during the Skyhoundz Italian Qualifier competition in Piverone (Italy) (it's a Disc dog competition)...i love shooting "dogs in action"....it's my mission :)Time
During the competition you can't choose the time...so you have to do it under the sun of midday too. This photo is taked at 12:01 at midday.Lighting
I generally look a for a nice different point of view during training or competition sessions because i think that a photo is not only a freeze but it's a little story that can tell us what the dog has just done and what the dog is going to do.....let us to think about the next seconds :) The light is terrible during the midday but i generally try to find a position where i can take advantage of the some background bokeh....and this is possible if the light pass throw the leaves in front of you or by side!Equipment
I've used a Nikon D4 with a Nikkor 70-200mm f/2,8 without any tripods or flash.Inspiration
The dogs always inspire me! I think that dogs in action are fantastic to discover...and in this case the dog athlete skills inspired me to take a different shot. If you take a good feeling with them you will be able to take their essence! This is a dog of a competitor that i love for his skills!Editing
Yes, i use Photoshop to post-processing all my raw files...in this case i balanced colors in LAB space mode to have more rich colors (green and orange). I improved the sharpness of the image and i saved shadow and highlights (white) on dogs because the sun at midday is terrible on black adn white dogs....the risk is to burn white or lost black tones :)In my camera bag
The gear i always bring with me is composed by a Nikon D4, a Nikon D700, a Nikkor 300mm 2,8, a Nikkor 70-200mm 2,8, a Nikon 105mm 2,8, a Sigma Art 50mm 1,4, a Sigma Art 35mm 1,4 and sometimes a Zeiss Otus 85mm 1,4...then i have some accessories like a Nikon TC-20e III, a small tripod and a monopod, batteries, CF memories etc.Feedback
My advices are: always lying on the grass, when possible put the light in front/side of you to have a nice bokeh of background, never stop try, use a telephoto with a big aperture, shutter speed higher then 1/1000s, do a lot of practise to be able to track the dogs eyes correctly and focused well. Be concentrated during the shooting thinking only about you behind the viewfinder and the dog....don't think about people around you :)
