Behind The Lens

Location

It's a photo I took during a Workshop of mine in Italy on May 2018. It was near Siena in Tuscany. I took it in a very dry and hot forest.

Time

It was afternoon and the light was very strong but really beautiful behind the dog.

Lighting

I had to struggle with the light in camera because in this situation its a big risk to under exposure the dog or clip the lights behind the dog. I was totally in backlight. My trick was to work on background closed to the clipping light zone to have the best quality on dog too. To do this I worked at ISO 3200 that it's a very high value in action especially if you want to save the quality.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D5 with a Nikkor 300mm f/2,8 and I didn't use any tripod or flash or filters.

Inspiration

I'm always be inspired by the dog I'm shooting. Depending on his color or his way to run, I decide how to approach to that photo selecting the place, the colours and the light direction.

Editing

I post processed the image with Photoshop CC as always to improve the quality of colours, bokeh, details, sharpness, shadows and giving to the photo my style and my mood.

In my camera bag

I always bring with me the Nikon D5 with the Nikkor 300mm f/2,8 and the Nikkor 200mm f/2 for action shots. Then when possibleI bring with me the Nikkor 105 f/1,4 for and there Nikkor 14-24 f/2,8 for some special portraits shots.

Feedback

The only way to take these pictures and have a similar result is to combine the technique with the knowledge on dog's behaviours understanding how they run and how they communicate with us. In this way, after a lot of practise and the right settings on camera, everybody can do it with his own style/mood. For me the result is more than a simple exercise, it's an instant that means everything about the action of that dog and his character.
