It actually was my wife's idea. She pitched it to me, I let it brew for a while and after gathering the equipment needed (I borrowed the projector from a friend), I started shooting different models using different patterns.Editing

Very simple, get a projector, select some images and patterns to project onto your talent, find a model (or many) to experiment with and go for it! In my specific case I had to use a very wide aperture (1.8) as the projector was an old one and not very bright...
