Location
I took this photo in Phuket, Thailand during the annual vegetarian festival. The whole 8-9 days festival is surely not for the fainted hart... early in the morning at the crack of dawn many get their face checks pierced and they get all sorts of items put through them (from plants, to swords to even rifles and scuba diving gear!), after that they walk all the way to the center of town from the shrine where they went through that extreme process. Other locals follow by carrying small shrines and all Thai people throw fire crackers to those shrine carrying individuals to "bless" them and "scare" the bad spirits away... all in all it is a very visually intense and loud experienceTime
this specific photo was taken around 9:30 in the morning as the procession was heading toward the old town centerLighting
ambient light only, I was actually so close to the subjects that I got my arm burned by few fire crackersEquipment

wake up early, get informed about the schedule (every day the whole process starts from a different shrine located in a different part of the island), dress white to blend in, get protective goggles and something to wrap your gear in... some even carry "gas masks" as the fumes from all those thousands of fire crackers are intoxicating...
