In 1960 I worked as Dr. Bristol Foster's assistant on Haida Gwaii, formerly known as the Queen Charlotte Islands, off the northern coast of British Columbia. We traveled by landrover on the only two of the approximately 150 islands that make up Haida Gwaii while exploring many of the others by boat. The islands supported a diverse variety of land mammals many of which showed differences from their continental counterparts and in some cases between some the individual islands. Bristol was investigating these differences from an evolutionary point of view for his doctoral thesis.
