Behind The Lens

Location

Water front concert in White Rock, BC. with headliners Fast Romantics.

Time

At 10pm on July 11. Given the time of day, primary lighting for the scene was provided by spotlights aimed at the of drummer and the group itself, and background lighting was provided by store front and street lighting.

Lighting

Lighting was complicated on account of the different temperatures of lighting in the scene that included tungsten/fluorescent street lighting and high temperature spot lights on the stage.

Equipment

Nikon D700 camera with a Nikkor 70-200 mm f/2.8 zoom lens.

Inspiration

The colours in the scene were hypnotic along with the movement of the drummer.

Editing

Post processed this picture using Lightroom 4 software.

In my camera bag

When I take pictures at concerts, I usually bring all of my photo equipment which includes my Nikon camera's (D700 and D810), and a variety of Nikkor lenses and a tripod, because I never know what I will end up shooting - group pictures, individuals, and/or audience. In my opinion, it is better to have more equipment than necessary to be pleasantly surprised with what I can shoot versus having wished I had brought something that I had left in my closet.

Feedback

Whenever I shoot handheld evening pictures I aim to shoot at the lowest ISO setting as possible, however, when their is a lot of movement and variety of colour and brightness changes, I end up boosting the ISO to whatever setting necessary to allow me to capture the moment. This particular shot was taken using ISO 1250, 1/20 sec, and f/2.8 aperture settings. I deliberately used a slow camera setting to show the movement of the drummer's hands and sticks.
