Behind The Lens

Location

Taken in Crescent Park, Surrey, BC Canada. This park is 1/2 hours drive from my home.

Time

It was taken around noon in mid October.

Lighting

Being late autumn and in the northern hemisphere, the sun sets early and does not rise high above the horizon. Thus allowing the colours to be rich and fully saturated. No flash or alternate lighting was used.

Equipment

Nikon D700 camera with a 35-80mm f/4.0-5.6 lense. A Manfrotto tripod was used to keep the camera steady for the 1/25 second exposure.

Inspiration

I regularly go to this location when I want to capture forest scenes. When I saw this arrangement of mushrooms growing in the din of the forest cover, it reminded me of a mystical forest setting where at any moment gnomes or little elves could appear...something that might appear in a Lord of the Rings sequel movie. It was magic to me and that is what I wanted to capture.

Editing

I used Lightroom 4.0 to boost the colours, and the clarity and sharpness of the mushrooms.

In my camera bag

I normally take all of my photography equipment on a planned photo shoot. This includes Nikon camera bodies (D700 & D810), a 70-200mm zoom lense, a 14-28mm wide angle lense, a 38-80mm lense, a 2X extender and a Manfrotto tripod.

Feedback

Sometimes the most beautiful images that we hope to capture happen to be just below our feet. To get this low angle shot, I had to lie down on the ground with my camera tilted slightly upward on a tripod. Being in mid October and autumn, this meant lying down on a wet and muddy ground. For me it was all worth it, since at the end of the day, I was able to capture the moment as I remembered it.
