Never met this railroader but he sure looks familiar. Nice job. Congrats on winning railroad related challenge.

Behind The Lens

Location

There is an old train route between Stettler and Big Valley, Alberta, Canada that has events all year long. So we booked a trip with our little grandson. This older fellow was one of the train staff who basically just walked around and chatted with people. He was leaning out one of the rail car doors chatting with someone when I grabbed this shot.

Time

This was in mid afternoon.

Lighting

Bascially direct, hard sunlight.

Equipment

Handheld Nikon 7000 with 18-200mm zoom lens.

Inspiration

He had that weathered train guy look, maybe the engineer, maybe the guy who shovelled the coal. Inside the rail cars it was always too dark to capture an available light photo … luckily he came to the doorway in direct light.

Editing

Bumped up the contrast to try to bring out the lines in his face more.

In my camera bag

I have found the 18-200 or 18-300 as well as the 80-200mm zoom lens are what I use most in recent years. I've grown accustomed to these lenses probably because I do more travelling and don't want to pack an array of prime lenses. I've used a D7000 for years now and find it quick to use. My heavier D3 full frame body is used for more sports related photography and tripod work.

Feedback

Have your camera with you wherever you go and if you see something, "shoot" it and decide later because if you don't, you'll never see that exact same picture ever again.
