The kitchen at the ancient Gonchen temple in Derge, eastern Tibet, founded in the 8th century AD. This is where the daily meals and yak butter tea which is the main sustenance for the abbots and monks of this venerable monastery of the Sakya school of Buddhism. Smoke from the wood burning cast iron stove wafts to the open vent in the ceiling, which created the shaft of light. Medieval monastery design is inspired by fortress architecture, thus it has thick walls and no windows.
