Behind The Lens

Location

I was out with a group of photographers to take pictures of birds of prey from the Hawk Quest Rescue group. They help injured birds. This was actually about 4 or 5 years ago. I was taking some pictures of this Great Horned Owl. All of a sudden he closed one eye. I took several and one came out pretty good. I call it "Just Kidding".

Time

It was mid May 2016 I think. It was a morning shoot a park with the Birds of Prey. It was about 7 am when I took this photo.

Lighting

We didn't control where the birds were being put for this shoot. However, on this one the owl was in a position to get the sunlight from behind me.

Inspiration

It was an opportunity to take pictures of birds I had never actually seen before. I always thought owls were amazing creatures. So, even though they were not completely out in the wild, I jumped at the chance to get some pictures. I was very new to photography and was still working on the manual settings. Once I got one picture figured out I ended up with several hundred pictures of about 10 different Owls, Falcons, a hawk, and an eagle.

Editing

Very little post processing was necessary. I cropped a little and maybe adjusted the contrast a little. That was all that was needed.

In my camera bag

Now I carry an Olympus OMD-EM5 MKIII camera. I have the Panasonic 8-18mm f2.8-f4.0 wide angle, Olympus 25mm f1.8, Olympus 14-150mm f4.0-f5.6, and I have the Olympus 100-400mm f5.0-f6.3. I carry multiple batteries and SD cards. There is also a remote shutter. I have several different filters. As well as lights and other misc. items.

Feedback

There are bird sanctuaries all over. Most use these events to help finance the centers. So, even if it cost some money it goes to the birds and you get some good pictures, practice, and feel good about it.
