Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in Akita City, Japan when I had a short vacation 4 years ago. We went to a park which my niece loves.

Time

Probably around 11am. Natural light.

Lighting

It was kind of a cloudy day.

Equipment

I was traveling so I had only one lens. Canon 70D and Tamron16-300mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC PZD. No tripod.

Inspiration

Since I do not have my own child, it was good time to practice child photography. I took almost 150 photos of her. I wanted to do something with dry leaves. Her mom picked a big leaf and made holes. Loved her idea.

Editing

I use only Lightroom. Just converted Raw file to JPG file. I did brighten a bit, but other than that, I did not manipulate anything.

In my camera bag

Now since my Canon 70D has broken, I have a Canon 90D and carry Tamron 60mm macro or Canon 100mm macro lens. If I take children, I use Sigma 105mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art outdoor, and for indoor tiny spaces, I use Canon 16-35mm f/2.8L III. Extra memory cards, batteries.

Feedback

For this type of photo, with blurred background, a telephoto lens/setting is best. (I usually take flowers or food. Not so difficult and I can retake until I'm satisfied.) But I don't have any children, so it's hard to practice. Also, children have short attention spans. I need to be quick. I knew my niece was a show-off type. Loves to pose, so it was easier for me to take her photos. If I do not know the children very well, first - I play with them a bit then I let them play so they forget about me and the camera. I usually get good, natural photos toward the end of my session -- I have to be very patient. I often sketch what kind of photo I would like to take and share my idea with the parents so I get more help, still,... 70% of the time, my plan will not go well. However, I also take good photos unexpectedly.
