Location
Brooklyn Botanic Garden in Brooklyn, New York CityTime
Around 4pm in June.Lighting
I took it around 4pm. Getting dark, but not too dark. It was a shady area, so pretty nice not to have any harsh sun light. there was a pond behind the fern so reflection helped lighted up the subject.Equipment
Canon 70D / Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM Lens / ISO 200 / f3.5 / 1/320sec and no tripod!! (sounds crazy but a lot of botanic gardens prohibit tripods , so I had to use my knee to support my elbow.Inspiration
They have a called it "the Japanese-pond-hill garden" and you can enjoy a lot of Japanese maple trees, flowers and a lot of ferns are there. I did not know there was such a large variety of ferns.. I did not care for them so much before, but I was suddenly into these fern and attracted to their shapes and lines and patterns and curves.Editing
I photographed in Raw and processed in Lightroom 5 . Since I do not have Photoshop, I did not do any further manipulation. In my camera bag
Canon 70D, I love both Tamron 60mm macro and Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro but I can not carry both so I try to bring my Tamron 60mm for indoor / conservatory which prohibits using a tripod (f/2 lens helps a lot) . Some times, holiday season, I bring a lensbaby. It's just fun to take bright lighting.Feedback
If you like to photograph ferns.. always nice bring a tripod! They usually grow in shady places. . If you pay attention around the middle of May, ferns start to show up and you can see a lot of swirls, curves, patterns and shapes. Flowers are nice, but don't overlook the leaves and greenery.
