While capturing images of Upper Lake Kananasksis, a moose emerged from a wooded area at the edge of the lake. For what seemed an eternity, the moose stopped and stared directly at me. Deciding that it did not want to proceed with a course that would have taken it directly to me, the moose turned ninety degrees, walked directly in front of me across a spit of land protruding into the lake and then without hesitation swam the remaining 50 meters to the opposite shore. Having actively searched for moose to photograph for several years, I was overwhelmed at my good fortune. I had just captured a moose, mirror reflection, distant waterfall, and mountains all in one scene.

Fantastic image John I just love the idea of that silhouetted horse that gives the image depth and scale!

Absolutely amazing how much the moose adds to the image. The story (every picture tells one) attention changes to that of the movement of the moose.

Thank you. I was quite fortunate to have been there. The moose appeared at the edge of the woods, stopped to look at me, calmly walked directly across the frame, and then swam the rest of the way across.

Not really. I had no time to move into HDR mode, so I prioritized focus rather than the lighting of the moose. As it turned out, the exposure for the background was good and there was enough light on the foreground to view the moose.Equipment
The shot was taken with a Sony A7R2 on a MeFoto travel tripod using the Gmaster 24-70mm lens.Inspiration
My intent was to take a photo of the mountains reflected in the lake and I had no idea there were moose in the area. Kananasksis is a beautiful area and even if the moose had not arrived, I would have been happy with the photo. The fact the moose arrived on the scene was simply a fortunate event.Editing
Processed in Lightroom with no special post-processing.In my camera bag
Sony A7R4, 12-24mm/4.0, 24-70/2.8 make up the basic travel bag for me. I travel with minimal equipment.Feedback
Travel often and take lots of photos. Be prepared to adjust quickly to changing lighting and keep an extra battery in your pocket. In this situation, I had to decide what was most important to focus on and, I decided very quickly to compose where the moose was going and wait for it to arrive. Also, when the moment arrives, don't be shy about pressing the shutter. More is better. I probably took 50 images in the span of ten to twenty seconds. Lastly, make sure your camera is in focus and breathe deeply.
