Behind The Lens

Location

The picture was taken in my backyard in Oklahoma. Along with other bird pictures, it is part of my "backyard bird collection".

Time

This hawk, also others, had a habit of perching on my backyard fence. I kept my eye out for any opportunity to get pictures. The picture was taken September 9, 2016, at 11:30 AM.

Lighting

It was opportunist lighting, perhaps aided by the softer early fall light. The picture was taken through a double pane sliding glass door.

Equipment

I have a Fujifilm FinePix HS50EXR with a really sharp at any focal length 1000 mm lens. The focal length of this picture was the equivalent of 621 mm.

Inspiration

I keep my eyes open for any bird activity in my backyard. This Red Shouldered Hawk, with especially dark plumage, was unique among others I had seen. The leaves, turning to fall colors, made a great background.

Editing

This picture was taken as a JPEG. I hadn't gotten into serious post processing until within the last 2 years. Since then, I take raw pictures with each of my cameras, leading to richer development possibilities.

In my camera bag

I take a lot of long focal length pictures with a Fujifilm HS50EXR that requires minimal accessories, including a lens hood and a backup battery, I have a sweet little Fujifilm X-T30, great for both photos and video, with 3 lens and an external flash. I also have a Sony A7II full frame with 2 lens and an external flash, a Canon M50 with 3 lens and external flash, and a Nikon D3500 with 2 lens and external flash, and last, but not least, a Panasonic DC-ZS70, very compact and portable with a great 30X sharp Leica lens, and like the HS50EXR, it is pretty much self sustaining. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Feedback

Know which animal subjects might show up, and where. Be an opportunist, since it is hard to get wild ones to pose for you.
