Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was made at Kimmeridge Bay in Dorset and to be specific Clavell’s Pier. This part of the Jurassic coast is renowned for its large boulders and quite a high tidal range

Time

This was captured just as the sun set on a July evening probably at about 9pm

Lighting

The shot is just about south south west facing into the setting sun. As it was a clear sky the colours and light changed so quickly as the sun set

Equipment

It was a humble Canon 450D with a canon 17-40 mm lens, tripod and Lee filters big stopper

Inspiration

I’d seen images from a well known Dorset photographer who made the sea look like clouds and it inspired me to try to capture long exposures myself

Editing

Just a little work to get rid of the odd dust bunnies.

In my camera bag

So now I have a Canon 5d mk3 with the faithful 17-40, 24-105. Lee hard ND, 1.2 ND, Big Stopper and the HiTech 16 stop filter, Lee polarising filter and a cable release! Oh and lots of batteries and memory cards.

Feedback

Be patient! Make sure you compose your shot in live view, check your focus is good and set to manual. Pop the filter down and click. Remember hyper focal distance if you want to keep the near view objects in focus... and above all... enjoy the moment
