Behind The Lens

Location

This photo has been taken in Hitchin on Lavender Field, among the beautiful rows of lavender plants. The smell is absolutely amazing, the place is definitely worth a visit, not only for taking photographs.

Time

What a stunning sunset! It's great that Hitchin Lavender allows some days with longer opening hours - which is fantastic, since you can get shots like this just before the sun sets. What a treat!

Lighting

I was shooting into the warm light of the sunset, which gives the lavender very ethereal, warm and beautiful colour. I just wanted to draw viewer's attention to single flowers, instead of the rows on the field.

Equipment

This photo is taken while handheld, with my Nikon D5500 with 18-55 VR lens that came with the camera. It just shows that you can take beautiful photos on anything!

Inspiration

I have been looking at the flower photos on google and I was searching for inspiration, when I came upon Hitchin Lavender advert and it turned out it's not that far from where I live, so I packed up my kit and went to check it out. I love flower photographs and this is a wonderful place for anyone who would like to take some shots and come out with some lavender as well!

Editing

It is a bracketed photo of 3 exposures - one for the sky, middle one and one for the foreground. I have to adjust the white balance to obtain this wonderful colours, as the lavender can look very blue in the photos. I was quite pleased with the result.

In my camera bag

I have my Nikon D5500 in my bag. I love taking landscape photograph, so I always take my Sigma 10-20 mm wide angle lens with me everywhere. Since I had the camera I always wanted to have wide angle lens and this one is so amazing! Always take a tripod with me and recently my dear hubby has gifted me with Lee filters for landscape - so I take them as well (these are so amazing!). I also take Nikkor 18-55 VR lens - it's absolutely great for walking about and so quick if you want some quick action photos.

Feedback

I would say - just go for it and try to take different angle photos! The lavender fields are such an amazing subject that you cannot go wrong, whichever way you shoot. Mind the bees though! They love it there :).
