This cabin is in the hills near Starveout Creek, close to Dale Oregon where we go hunting each year. The family I hunt with has been going to this place for something like 40 years or more, which I thought was a really long time. That is until I tried to find out a little more history about this place. I didn't find much on this specific cabin but I did find a story about how folks moved to this general area when the Ranger Station first opened around 1911. The story talked about the trip to Pendleton by train, and then by horse through Ukiah and on to the Dale area. Also described was the way of life and food-supplies that the pioneer family would have had. with things like potatoes, rice, beans, oatmeal, canned carnation milk and whatever could be trapped or hunted. The interesting part is Charles Fredrick Groom was the ranger, and an experienced woodsman and his new wife, Etta Estes was not and apparently knew nothing about camp life. Can you imagine what that trip and adventure must have been like for her? It must have been such an interesting time and experience to go through, I can only wonder at what the move to this remote place and life would have been like during those early years.... I wonder what stories this place has to tell?
