Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Southwestern International Raceway near Tucson, Arizona

Time

Just after sunset

Lighting

Just one on-camera flash (Nikon SB-910) set at 1/8 power with rear curtain sync

Equipment

Nikon D7100 with Nikon 18-140 lens

Inspiration

I shoot drag races pretty regularly and love the effect I get with slow shutter speeds and rear curtain sync.

Editing

Simple adjustment in levels. I am a photographer, not a Photoshop artist.

In my camera bag

These days I carry 2 Nikon D500 bodies, 2 Nikon SB-910 flash units, Nikon 200-500/F5.6, Nikon 80-200/F2.8, Nikon 18-140,/F3.5-F5.6, Tokina 11-20/F2.8, Nikon 10.5/F2.8 fisheye, Manfrotto monopod, Slik tripod and polarizing filters for the 11-20 and 18-140.

Feedback

This is not a difficult shot. You can pan at relatively slow shutter speeds (This shot was at 1/20) and the flash will stop the action. The biggest thing to watch out for is other people shooting flash because if another flash goes off during your exposure, you will have a double exposure or a ghost image. The technique can be used for anything that is moving in low light, such as people or animals running.
