Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on one of my trips across Canada to the west coast. I was traveling to visit my Identical twin-sister. I was on the Via-rail train that winds it's way around the mountains and the red caps announced that we were approaching Mount Robson on our right. I set my camera in my hands and just started snapping all the photo's I could. We were all fortunate enough to have a clear day to get a clear shot of the mountain because the mountain is so big that it is often clouded and you can't get it's full view. I used the mountains in front of mount Robson to frame Mount Robson. It was the time of year that I took this photo during the early spring when there was still snow on the mountain. British Columbia Canada is where I took this photo. It was the northern route through the mountains or almost northern route.

Time

The time of day was late afternoon when this shot was taken. The exact time I couldn't tell you though. It was late in the afternoon, somewhere around 3-5:pm. It was early spring.

Lighting

It was natural daylight as far as the lighting I used goes.

Equipment

I didn't have a tripod, I used my arms as a tripod. There was no flash used in this photo and I used my cannon power-shot to take this photo. It was the only camera I had on me at the time. My other camera a Sony digital SLR was in my baggage compartment on the train much to my disappointment. I was glad it all turned out well for me though just the same.

Inspiration

I love nature and being able to see the mountains I had heard so much about from my friends and family, I wanted to capture as much as I could of those mountains, especially mount Robson. It is one of the highest peaks in British Columbia. I was awe struck by it's sheer size. I loved that it still had snow on it. One of my best moments for that trip next to being with my family, was being able to capture this photo. Nature inspired me to take this photo.

Editing

There was no post -processing done before, during or after this photo was captured.

In my camera bag

Well I have two battery charges for both camera's, the Sony DSLR and my cannon power-shot camera, also the kit lens that came with the Sony and lens kit cleaners, and lens covers. I also had a small tripod that was only meant to be used on a flat surface. A cable for uploading my photo's onto my computer when I get home and that is all I carried on me at that time. I had previously taken my camera from the baggage department so I could take this photo. I left my camera bag in the compartment because my Cannon power shot camera was quicker to use then my Sony DSLR and there was nothing I had to do to prepare for this picture but take the photo. When your on a fast moving train it isn't long before you've passed your subject for getting the photo, so you have to be quick.

Feedback

The best advice is to always have your camera ready and any equipment ready that you will be using. Weather and lighting conditions is good to pay attention to. Time of day. There are gates between the cars on the train and if you ask the red cap on the train they will open the top half of the gate so that you can take a photo with taking it through a glass window. It all depends on their schedule or if they have the time to do that for you.
