I shot this on my first visit to Vancouver. I was looking for a good spot to shot the Vancouver skyline and happened across this scene on Stanley Park. There was a lot of low cloud cover which was lit a ruddy color from the city lights then reflected back into the water. I ended up sitting for a while and just soaking up the calm and still moment in the middle of a beautiful city.

Location
Vancouver British Columbia Canada at the marina between Stanley Park and Downtown Vancouver.Time
It's a night shot taken around 10 pm in the late summer.Lighting
The shot was lit by the city and marina lights which were reflected by low cloud coverEquipment
It was a time exposure and I bracketed a dozen shots at to ensure a solid level of detail in dark and light areas of the picture. Used a Nikon D600 with a .Nikor 24 to 85 mm lens with a tripod and wireless remote. Shot in RAW with camera set for mirror up mode to reduce vibration.Inspiration
The White masts of the boats against the city skyline and the reflections in the calm water was compelling. I knew at once it was a special moment that I had to capture.Editing
I layered the three best exposures and reduced black in the white color band to get the masts to pop the way my eye was seeing them.In my camera bag
The above plus a Nikkor 70 to 300 mm' and a Nikkor AFS 14 to 24 mm lenses. Variable neutral density filters and polorization filters.Feedback
Using HDR layering can help bring out the colors and lighting the way that only eye could a few years ago'. Don' t fall into the temptation to over process your photos with it. Think natural not supernatural. To get your raw materials for layering don't just bracket one shot on each side do several stop different on each side to give you the best choice.
