I took the photo during a vintage cars' gathering in the most central square of Udine, my home town.Time
It was mid afternoon of one of the first days of October 2012, a saturday. I was strolling around the downtown area of my home town with my family. To be honest, although I had my equipment with me, I didn't know there was a vintage cars' gathering so I was pleasantly surprised to find a bunch of beautiful 4-wheeled old ladies ready for a photo session ;-)Lighting
Not much to say, except that it was getting darker (as I said we were at the beginning of october and days were getting shorter) so I had to shoot with high ISO (I didn't want to use flashlight to avoid nasy reflections and awful shadows) which got me some digital noise to cope with.Equipment
I took this one with my main camera, Nikon D60, with the standard 18-55 lens, no lens, no tripod. Not an exciting equipment ;-) but it helps you to get the job done :-)Inspiration
I love vintage cars, they have soul, not like modern cars which look like they all have been made from the same design. Most of all I like Alfa Romeo cars, my father had three Giulia in a row and I remember them from my childhood. So, as soon as I saw this fabulous gem I started to take pictures. It's worthwile to remember that this masterpiece, designed by Franco Scaglione, was years ahed of competitors when it was launched with its 0.28 cx.Editing
There is a lot post-processing behind this shot: first of all I needed to let the car stand out from the background so I applied a selection mask to darken everything around the car. Then I used GMIC filters in Gimp to soothe the car surface and to get rid of digital noise. Lastly I used again GMIC to emphasize the reflections on the fender, the chrome plating and on the hood.In my camera bag
Now I use regularly a Nikon D60 with its stock 18-55 lens. As a second lens I always bring with me an old (more than 30 years...) 300 mirror lens, really not a modern one :-) but I can manage to get some good shots with it. Not in my bag (it doesn't fit...) but in my car I carry also a tripod, in the case of night shots. Last but not least, when I don't have with me the main equipment I use my cell phone (now a Huawei Y360, in other moments a Samsung Galaxy).Feedback
Never forget your equipment at home, bring it always with you otherwise you could loose the chance to take wonderful shots. From a photographic point of view, try to shoot from different viewpoints. Don't be afraid to shoot, the more shots you take the greater the chance to get something good. And don't forget to ask permission to the owner of the car ;-)
