Tranquility Cracks on the top of Table Mountain in Cape Town, South Africa, is a place of wonder and mystery - its extensive network of faults and narrow passages harbouring many-a beautiful secret waiting to be discovered. A glimpse of erubescent pink through some thick vegetation suggested just such a secret, and the subsequent slog through the scabrous flora lead me to this stunning King Protea (Protea cynaroides) - resplendent and enchanting in its secret place high on the crest of the mountain. Haloed by ray of late afternoon light and strongly contrasted against the surrounding foliage, it is a vision of power and majesty; the embodiment of the regal nature of its very name.
