Behind The Lens

Location

This is my cat, on my blanket, on my couch, in my house. No planning here, just my beautiful boy, looking spectacular with the contrasting blanket. Anyone who tries to photograph black animals knows how hard it is to get a good photo of these beasts!

Time

Midday. When the cat is cute, you shoot.

Lighting

No studio lighting, just what daylight comes in, along with perhaps a lamp or two.

Equipment

Just my standard setup, no tripod, no flash.

Inspiration

Again, anyone who has tried to take photos of their black beasts, knows it is not an easy task, so when a good opportunity rears it's head you shoot!

Editing

Nothing, but slight adjustments to standard settings.

In my camera bag

Flash, rarely used, Second lens, rarely used. Extra batteries, and some pixie dust.

Feedback

For shots that show nice definition to your black animals, go for a bright blanket or background. This will help give you definition to what can become a dark muddy mess. IF they want to half bury them in it like my little boy did, mores the better!
