Location
This photo was taken in the middle of a wheat field. I live in the heart of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, also known as Amish Country, where there is no shortage of beautiful farmland at my disposal. I find the wheat fields to be particularly beautiful.Time
This photo was taken during the golden hour before sunset. I wanted some new photos of my then 13 year old daughter, and I'd had my eye on this wheat field and thought it was the perfect backdrop for a photo session with her.Lighting
During this photo session I had my back was to the sun so I could capture the warm glow of the sun on her face. It was actually my daughter's idea to stand in front of the sun to take some silhouette shots. She's a smart kid!Equipment
This was shot handheld with a Nikon D3100 with a 55-200 lens.Inspiration
Like I already mentioned it was my daughter's idea to stand in front of the sun to get some silhouette shots. As I was clicking away on my camera she started flipping her head back so her hair went flying. I clicked even faster! I snapped about twenty shots of her doing this and crossed my fingers that at least one of them would be good. When I finally unloaded the images onto my computer and looked through them I was thrilled to see this image!Editing
There was the top of a small tree at the horizon that I removed because I found it distracting. There were also a few flies and gnats buzzing around that looked like spots in the image so I removed those as well. The wheat behind her looked dark so I lightened that up a bit, I sharpened the image and then converted to black and white. In my camera bag
I carry a Nikon D3100 with an 18-55 and 55-200 lens. I have a tripod in the back of my vehicle at all times and a new tripod that I just won for this image! I don't have a ton of equipment so I do what I can with what I have.Feedback
Capturing this type of image is a ton of fun. Try using different apertures and shutter speeds to capture less or more movement/blur. Snap a lot of images because it is difficult to get the silhouette positioned correctly in frame, but when you do it's like opening a present on Christmas morning!
