Location
This was taken near Dodge City, KS in the United StatesTime
It is hard to say an exact time as this was one of the 11 tornadoes we saw that day. I would say this was shot roughly around 5pm CDT.Lighting
There is interesting lighting in this shot, on the left side of the tornado you can see a "hail shaft", which is bright and white and on the right side of the tornado, you can see the darkness and terror of the storm's core. In fact, another tornado was developing on the right side of this picture!Equipment
There were baseball sized hail falling nearby and a lot of "chaser traffic" in the area. With muddy roads and fields, did not have much heart to pull out the tripod so I simply took some quick pictures without a tripod!! Took this shot with a Canon T5i with 18-55mm lense.Inspiration
I love landscape shots, especially storms and tornadoes. This shot depicts the immense height and size of the tornado compared to the electrical cables in front of it. The dust getting picked and and swerving around the tornado's funnel depicts the violent motion of it as well.Editing
I tried to leave it as pure as possible, some saturation/vibrance and contrast boost with some filters to clean it up.In my camera bag
Seinheiser microphone, Canon T5i, 55-250mm lense, extra batteries, SJCAM and extra memory cards. I usually travel light.Feedback
My advice is get a weather forecasting background if you're going to shot severe weather. Knowing the storm motion and making sure you are secure where you are shooting will make sure you get that "shot" you really want. Be careful of lightning too!!
