This picture was taken in Burlington, Colorado on the Colorado/Kansas border. A fairly impressive storm developed just south of the city.Time
This was in the evening hours.Lighting
Lighting was very difficult as we were facing the sun. The sun is behind the clouds, making for difficult contrast.Equipment
Since the storm was stationary for a good 30-40mins, the camera was on a tripod the hold time. The “inflow”, the winds going into the storm, were so strong that I needed to hold the tripod down the entire time!Inspiration

Yes, had to edit the contrasts so you could see the details. Although I enjoy the contrast betweenlight and dark in this picture, it needed to be tuned a bit so it wasn’t “blown” out of proportion, quite literally.In my camera bag

I would suggest always using a tripod, although that is very hard to do all the time due to the nature of storms. Since storms are always moving and clouds always in motion, a slower shutter speed usually will give you a great photography with these type of storms, much like photography with water at a high exposure. Rule of third is important, but most important is a good foreground with these type of pictures. A good forgeound like a barn, trees or hay bails would have brought this picture to a whole other level.
