After decades of decline, according to India’s National Tiger Conservation Authority the tiger population within the country has increased over fifty percent in just eight years. The growth is attributed to better management that includes protection for core tiger breeding habitats, tiger corridors between habitats and improved poaching control.
India now estimates it tiger population to be about 2,200, amounting to more than half of the world’s population of wild tigers occurring mostly in pockets among 13 Asian countries. Several countries within the tiger’s range are now working to double the wild tiger population by 2022.
