Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in Barberino di Mugello, on the shores of Lake Bilancino. I went to the lake with a tripod and remote shutter to make this kind of shooting at sunset

Time

I arrived on the lake after a walk on a path that was about 7pm on 3 June 2015 and I placed my easel after studying the shot. Seeing the light and the strong contrasts decided for a series of shots making a hdr of 6 frames with variation of 0.7.

Lighting

The light is totally natural and (despite the time) there was still too much difference in setting between the sky and the water. The ND filter was difficult to use because the strong light was not only in cileo but also reflected on the water. I decided at that point to realize the hdr (as previously said).

Equipment

To make this image I (as already said) made 6 shots in the following using the tripod and setting my Nikon D4S with a variation of 0.7. I used my Nikkor 14-24 with focal length 14mm.iso 100 f / 7.1 and time in 1/30 (this is the setting of the first shot). The machine then made the other shots with the described exposure differences of 0.7 plus and minus.

Inspiration

I left home just to make a picture like that with the sky that was confused with water. The decision to make a hdr (as mentioned earlier) was motivated by the great contrast between sky, water and land. I realized that the green surrounding the water would have come too dark and so I opted for the hdr solution. In the end, after editing the shots, I realized that what I had in mind was able to make it happen.

Editing

For the realization of the image I used the program Photomatrix Pro with which I superimposed the shots and adjusted lights, shadows and saturation. I did not want to exaggerate the hdr because I do not like it. The photo, in fact, does not show that it is a hdr. After I opened photoshop in the raw room for further finishing in specific areas.

In my camera bag

My Nikon D5 and / or D850 are normally in my bag. The lens ALWAYS present are 14-24; 24-70 and 70-200 (all f / 2.8 Nikon). the 85 mm 1.4 and the Nikon 2x focal duplicator. Obviously the tripod.

Feedback

To make photos, we must always analyze the image and be masters of various techniques. Normally when we are faced with strong contrasts we use a nd filter to balance the lights. The problem is that (in this case) there was not the left area of the very dark frame, the light central both up and down (the sky was reflected in the water) and the right side also dark. Using an ND would not solve the problem. We must therefore reason and (in the technical knowledge that each of us has) find the solution. The solution was to realize the hdr that has solved every problem.
