Did you take a landscape shot of this one? Would love to compare. Cars are 'flat' by design so a similar composition in landscape format would flatter their design further I imagine in my mind. Nice!

Behind The Lens

Location

This is a composite image. I took the background from NJ shooting NYC and the foreground at an event to raise awareness for autism. I am self taught and am a lesson provider at PhotoProfessors.com

Time

The two images were shot at different times of the day. The background was early evening while the foreground was early afternoon. This adds to the complexity of the conposite.

Lighting

When shooting landscapes you must be patient and wait for the lighting you want. That also includes a little luck. The tricky part in this was to match the foreground to that lighting.

Equipment

I am a nikon shooter. Since this wasn't planned I ended up breaking some rules and shot each image with different equipment and at different focal lengths. I used my d7100, d610, 17-55mm nikor and tamron 70-200. The background was shot on a tripod while the foreground was a handheld shot.

Inspiration

The foreground was essentially a parking lot filled with cars and people. I wanted something special to come from the images I took, something I could share that would reach a broader audience and continue the goal of the event and bring more awareness about autism.

Editing

Maybe I could just send everyone to PhotoProfessors.com? Ok ok there was a lot of post work since a composite is done in post. Initially I did a basic edit on the cityscape to clean it up, add a little contrast and mood with some curves adjustments. Added a little saturation. Then adding in the foreground i did some dodge and burning and use some gradient maps to finish it off.

In my camera bag

I am not an equipment guy, I believe in the photographer. I simply have my d7100 crop, and d610 ff. The 17-55mm lens for the crop and the 70-200 on the full frame. One day I plan on adding a long lens and wide angle to the ff but those will be for specific shoots. Otherwise the only other piece is my tripod.

Feedback

The best advice I have is to get creative. You may not like a shot as it was taken but with some creativity you can turn it into anything you want. Learn the skills, practice, practice, practice, and get creative.
