Piglet is our ten year old rescue chihuahua. Saved her from the pound over Superbowl Weekend. She'd been dumped on a logging road in the middle of nowhere with two other small dogs. Teenagers out partying found them, but could only catch two. I found this dog in the shelter, quiet and calm as could be, and I knew she had to come home. She's a GEM of a dog, quiet, well-behaved, loves the cats, loves the dogs, fears the chickens. We didn't *need* another dog, but she needed us. She's SO good in public - she loves going to the Farmers' Market with us and getting attention from everyone, and I love being able to advocate for senior adoption. She's an excellent ambassador for Chihuahuas, and proof of how wonderful a senior companion can be.

This photo was taken in a large field on Officer's Row in Vancouver, WA. We were driving by and saw all the forget-me-nots and I knew it would be the perfect spot to take some photos of my new rescue dog at sunset.Time
This was sunset: magic hour! But she wound up sitting in the shade, which gave it a nice even look and basically made the sunset irrelevant.Lighting
When lighting is too harsh or inconsistent, I aim for a patch of shade.Equipment
This was taken with my old Nikon D700 and my go-to lens, my Nikon 50mm 1.4.Inspiration
Piglet was a recent rescue dog. My husband and I already had three dogs and had gone to a shelter to meet a cat. While talking her over we browsed the dogs, knowing none could come home with us. Until I saw this little lady. I sat on the floor of her kennel giving her belly rubs, she climbed into my lap, and fell asleep. I learned she was at least 10, had been abandoned on a logging road with two other small dogs, had been anemic from fleas and ticks, was never fixed - and had been at the shelter for months because she was so quiet no one looked in her cage. And people saw "senior chihuahua" and assumed she'd be a yappy ankle biter. It took about 12 hours to wear my husband down, and I brought her home the next morning. I have portraits of all of our other doggies, and knew we needed one of Piglet. When I saw these tiny flowers I knew my tiny Piggie would be perfect there!Editing

Keep your eye out for locations! This was just a couple of miles from my house, and on a Sunday evening was quiet and we had it to ourselves, so no distractions for my subject. For me a lot of the times my subject dictates the where - she's old and teeny and quiet and a busy location would have made her anxious. Consider your subject when choosing a spot!
