Location
I took this picture of the Delaware River right on the border of New Jersey and Pennsylvania. When I saw the full moon out I remembered this nearby location, and set out to catch a panoramic landscape.Time
I shot this picture just before sunset. I wanted to capture the full moon, and by this time it was in a great position with no clouds in the sky.Lighting
I wanted to have a warm, golden light illuminating the landscape. I love how the light just before sunset made the trees and mountains glisten, yet the bank of the river I was standing on was in complete shade adding a darker frame to the image.Equipment
I shot this with my Canon 60D, and Sigma 17-70mm lens. My ISO was 100, and 10.0 sec at f/18. I also used my ND variable filter, which helped give the river a smooth, mirror-like reflection.Inspiration
Nature and the moon was my biggest inspiration. I have tried to capture the full moon at this time of day before, but clouds were usually in the way. The fact that it was a clear sky, and I had scoped out a great place to catch a reflection in the water, I was determined to set up and create a panoramic landscape image to reflect the beauty of that sunset.Editing
For post-processing I used 3 images and merged them together to create a panoramic in Adobe's Lightroom. I then made adjustments to the scene using Lightroom as well, before finishing off in photoshop. I had taken a close-up shot of the moon in order to capture more detail. I used photoshop to add the better image of the moon in place of the one originally in the shot.In my camera bag
I always have my Nikon D810 & Canon 60D. I usually have a few different lenses like a 50mm, 24-70mm and 70-200mm. I always bring stuff to clean my lenses and filters off when i'm near water that can be splashing onto my lens or filters as I shoot. Extra batteries and SD cards are also a must. I brought my circular polarizer and nd variable filters this day as well.Feedback
The Delaware Water Gap has so many beautiful shots near the river. I would definitely scope out your spot for any landscape near a river before hand so you know where the sun is rising or setting on the scene. I also prefer shooting during the golden hour to avoid harsh shadows, but that's just my preference! Also, looking for a foreground object (like the fallen tree branch in the river in my picture), this tends to add depth to the image and makes them more interesting. Most importantly though, take a picture of something you find beautiful and would love to capture forever!
